Langli is one of the three Wadden Sea islands, alongside Fanø and Rømø. Today, most people are well aware of these islands, but if you go back to the Bronze and Iron Ages, Fanø, Rømø, and Langli didn’t even exist above sea level. New research has shown that these Wadden Sea islands only resurfaced during the Iron Age.

The Sudden Halt of Sand Accumulation

The disappearance of these three islands wasn’t due to rising sea levels, as many might assume. Instead, it occurred because the addition of sand to the islands suddenly stopped or was drastically reduced. In this region, it's common for sand and other sediments to be in constant movement, shifting across the coastal landscape due to ocean currents, storms, and waves.

Until recently, it was believed that the three Wadden Sea islands had existed for around 8,000 years. However, new research has shown otherwise. Whether other Wadden Sea islands have undergone similar changes is still uncertain, but there are indications that they may have experienced comparable developments over the past millennia.

The Islands Play a Major Role in the Wadden Sea Region

The "re-emergence" of these three Wadden Sea islands is not only significant for the people who have lived on Rømø, Fanø, and Langli throughout history. The islands play a crucial role in the entire existence of the Wadden Sea area, a protected UNESCO World Heritage site. The three Wadden Sea islands act as a natural barrier, helping to protect the Wadden Sea. Without these islands, the unique conditions of tidal influence shaping the landscape and nature wouldn't exist.

The Islands Today

Today, the three Wadden Sea islands are popular tourist destinations and home to thousands of people. The sandy beaches, dune landscapes, and unique nature of Fanø, Rømø, and Langli attract many visitors from several countries during the summer season. However, the islands are also frequently visited outside of summer by guests drawn to the vast natural offerings of the surrounding area.
